Public transport in Ethiopia
by: Amei

Getting a seat on a bus in Ethiopia can be hair raising. People just push, they lose all their friendliness and manners. Here is how to get round it:

Talk to the station manager or young people hanging around the bus station the night before until you find a person willing to reserve a seat for you. It will cost you about 1€. The following morning at around 5.30 everybody will rush to their bus, but before the door is opened for the public the driver will open his side for those young men who want to reserve a seat. They climb in before the others. you walk in and take the seat and give him the money. No rush, no pushing, no fear. Unfortunately, I only found out one week before I left. I had struggled for seats for 7 weeks. Have a safe ride!
