Mui Ne Beacht to Hoi An Vietnam Scam--> changing tickets!

by Sandra
(Netherlands)

We bought tickets for the sleeping bus overnight. When the bus stopped in Na Thrang we were asked to give the tickets to the man of the tourist/bus organisation. Some minutes later before travellers from Na Thrang were asked to get into the bus the man showed us a ticket and said that we did not buy a sleeping bus ticket and had to leave the bus. I was very angry and did not agree. My boyfriend went in the office and as they did not compromise on costs or arranged any other transport or accommodation we did not agree. We showed the booking receipt (we were lucky to have this) and said that they were wrong and we were staying in the bus.

Afterwards the guy said it was ok but then the bus again stopped and a woman from the agency entered the bus, this time with a ticket for one person and told us that it was our ticket. She was really shouting and wanted to get our receipt when we strongly avoided this the bus then started driving again and we travelled to Hoi An overnight without any problems. We are almost sure that somewhere in Na Thrang people were waiting for the bus that night that never arrived...

Hue to Hanoi bus scam
by: sheri

We got dumped off a supposedly broken down bus 10km outside of Hanoi having paid for a ticket into the city. The Vietnamese on the bus were taken by minibus into city but all the Westeners where told to buy a taxi ride or stay in a certain hotel of the tour guide and he would take you into the city himself.

Having all refused a standoff ensued when things started to get very heated the driver threatened us after we conducted a sit in on his bus he locked us inside and only unlocked the door when we threatened to break everyone of his bus windows one by one from the inside.

Thankfully a small village bus passed by which we all flagged down and got a ride into the city for very very small amount of money as the ticket fare was printed on the ticket roll and we arrived into hanoi severely pissed off with the bus company which was CAMEL TOURS. One to avoid if possible!!!!

It goes to show...

Always keep your payment receipt or stub, and never let your ticket out of your sight!

Unfortunately scams like this are all too common.

Here's another favorite bus scam: the driver steps out and tells you he'll give you a 'special price' if you pay him directly and he doesn't actually give you a ticket. This way he doesn't have to hand over the money to the bus owner...
